“Curses and fire. Damage over time stacks up on everything that chases you.” The game's own pitch

Best Warlock build

Recommended

Plague spreader

  1. Seed of Corruption capstone
  2. DoT-jump milestone
  3. Siphon Life (DoT ticks heal you)
  4. area and haste passives

DoTs jump on every death and dying enemies explode, so packs clear themselves while you walk away.

Alternative

Soulfire + luck

  1. Soulfire (kills gather soul shards; Intensity makes it hit harder)
  2. Curse of Agony
  3. luck from the Gnome racial and Mark of the Chosen

A popular community build: luck means rarer, stronger cards at every level-up while Soulfire handles elites.

Avoid: Picking every direct-damage spell. DoT spread is where the class wins.

Warlock talents: capstones and milestones

A capstone rebuilds Warlock around one idea, and you run one at a time. Milestones are the big mid-tree talents on the way there. Text below is the game's own. For every talent with its numbers, see all Warlock talents.

Capstones

Seed of Corruption

Start with Corruption; enemies that die under your DoTs burst for 3% of their max health within 6 yd.

Pact of the Annihilan

A Pit Lord fights for you for 20 sec every 30 sec (sooner with cooldown reduction, min 13 sec), up to 2 at once. Its Felseeker grows with your Searing Pain upgrades, hits up to 6 enemies and hits its main target 25% harder. Rules out Butcher.

Butcher

A Felguard fights for you for 20 sec every 30 sec (sooner with cooldown reduction, min 13 sec), up to 2 at once. It cleaves up to 10 enemies, every third swing deals double damage, and it hits 50% harder below 30% health. Rules out Pact of the Annihilan.

Rain of Chaos

A second Rain of Fire falls on its own every 13 sec, and its burning ground slows.

Milestones worth chasing

  • Contagion: Corruption and Curse of Agony jump to the nearest enemy when their target dies.
  • Shadow Cleave: Shadow Bolt forks to 2 more enemies for 15% damage.
  • A demon companion for good: a Felhunter that bites 2 enemies (+0.5% damage per 1% missing health) and eats 10% of your strongest DoT for 150% burst damage (Soul Devourer), or a Voidwalker that grows with your damage reduction and health and shields you up to 25% max health (Soul Link). Pick one.
  • Legion Gate: every 4 sec brings 3 random lesser demons for 12–16 sec, up to 12 at once; its Succubi stun Corrupted enemies.
  • Nightfall: Shadow Bolts corrupt their target for 40% damage over 12 sec, and Corruption ticks have a 2% chance to fire a free Shadow Bolt.
  • Conflagrate: start with Immolate, and Shadow Bolt or Searing Pain make Immolated enemies explode for 15% of the hit within 6 yd.

Spells you will see

  • Shadow Bolt
  • Corruption
  • Curse of Agony
  • Immolate
  • Searing Pain
  • Rain of Fire

What is the best race for Warlock?

Gnome (luck and shorter cooldowns), Orc (Blood Fury) or Undead (shadow resistance, a death save). Default starting races: Human, Gnome, Orc and Undead. (In v0.120.0+, any other race can be unlocked for 100 achievement points on the Rewards tab.) Starting in version 0.120.0, you can also unlock any race for 100 achievement points on the Rewards → Races tab. How do you unlock Warlock talents?

Play Warlock runs. Every run pays talent experience to the class you played, based on time survived, kills, bosses, a win and how hard the zone was. If Warlock is behind your best class it earns bonus experience, so it catches up faster. Zones also unlock per class: beating Elwynn Forest with Warlock opens Duskwood for Warlock only.
