Nine battlegrounds

Zones and final bosses

Zones unlock one at a time, for each class separately: beat a zone's final boss and the next one opens for that class. Each zone has its own horde, boss line-up and run length.

Unlock

Elwynn Forest is open from the start. A win opens the next zone for the class that won, so every class makes its own way down the list.

Length

The run lasts until the final boss arrives. It differs by zone; Elwynn Forest is 16:00, with a boss every three minutes before that.

Bosses

Bosses come on a schedule and enrage below 30% health. The final boss ends the zone.

After

Win, then keep going in endless mode, or raise the difficulty for more talent experience and loot.

  1. The Defias Uprising

    Elwynn Forest

Kobolds pour out of Jasperlode Mine, gnolls cross the river and the Defias march on the farms.

    Final boss
    Edwin VanCleef
    Boss schedule
    3:00 Hogger · 6:00 Mother Fang · 9:00 Rhahk'Zor · 12:00 Mr. Smite · 16:00 Edwin VanCleef
    Unlock
    Open from the start

Tip: The tutorial zone and the only one open at the start. The run lasts 16:00 until VanCleef arrives; use it to bank talent experience for every class.

  2. Night of the Nightbane

    Duskwood

The graves of Raven Hill stand open, worgen hunt between the trees and Morbent Fel raises the dead.

    Final boss
    Morbent Fel
    Earlier bosses
    Naraxis · Mor'Ladim · Stitches · Lupos
    Unlock
Edwin VanCleef in Elwynn Forest, per class

Tip: The first real damage check after the tutorial. If your build only just survived Elwynn, play a few more Elwynn runs first: every run pays talent experience.

  3. The Burning Legion

    Warsong Gulch

A demon gate tears open over the gulch. Imps, felhounds and satyrs pour through.

    Final boss
    Lord Kazzak
    Earlier bosses
    Doomguard Commander · Mannoroth's Herald · Varimathras · Lord Hel'nurath
    Unlock
Morbent Fel in Duskwood, per class

Tip: The first zone where a demon army replaces local wildlife. If Duskwood felt close, take a defensive passive (Fortitude, Mark of the Wild) before another damage spell.

  4. The Scourge Invasion

    Arathi Basin

Necropolises hang over the Basin. The dead of Arathor rise as the Scourge arrives.

    Final boss
    Kel'Thuzad
    Earlier bosses
    Patchwerk · Lord Blackwood · Baron Rivendare · Anub'Rekhan
    Unlock
Lord Kazzak in Warsong Gulch, per class

Tip: An undead army is exactly what spreading damage is for: area size, DoTs that jump and chain effects earn their card slots here.

  5. The Gates of Dire Maul

    Feralas

Gordunni ogres break out of Dire Maul with Woodpaw gnolls and the wild things of Feralas.

    Final boss
    King Gordok
    Earlier bosses
Zevrim Thornhoof · Alzzin the Wildshaper · Tendris Warpwood · Immol'thar
    Unlock
Kel'Thuzad in Arathi Basin, per class

Tip: Ogres are big, tanky bodies. Builds that only tickle the screen start to stall; crit and burst effects help.

  6. The Blood God Wakes

    Gurubashi Arena

The Hakkari turn the Arena into an altar: trolls, raptors and the Blood God's serpents fill the ring.

    Final boss
    Hakkar the Soulflayer
    Earlier bosses
High Priestess Jeklik · High Priest Venoxis · Bloodlord Mandokir · Jin'do the Hexxer
    Unlock
King Gordok in Feralas, per class

Tip: The arena floor is ringed by stands, so there is less room to kite than in open zones. Self-healing, shields or a death save make this one far easier.

  7. The Frozen Wilds

    Alterac Valley

Troggs swarm from the mines, the wolves are starving and the Ice Lord stirs beneath the snow.

    Final boss
    Azuregos
    Earlier bosses
Korrak the Bloodrager · Ivus the Forest Lord · Lokholar the Ice Lord · Glacius the Frozen Titan
    Unlock
Hakkar the Soulflayer in Gurubashi Arena, per class

Tip: A late zone: bring a build that already beat Gurubashi Arena, and spend gold on caches early so your rings and trinkets come online.

  8. The Lord of Blackrock

    Blackrock Mountain

The Dark Iron and the Blackrock clan march out together, with fire elementals and dragonkin.

    Final boss
    Nefarian
    Earlier bosses
General Angerforge · Warchief Rend Blackhand · Emperor Dagran Thaurissan · Majordomo Executus
    Unlock
Azuregos in Alterac Valley, per class

Tip: The second-to-last zone. Expect to fail a few runs here; each one still pays talent experience.

  9. The Old God Stirs

    Gates of Ahn'Qiraj

The Scarab Wall has fallen. Silithid and Qiraji legions spill across the sands.

    Final boss
    C'Thun
    Earlier bosses
Kurinnaxx · General Rajaxx · Princess Huhuran · Ossirian the Unscarred
    Unlock
Nefarian in Blackrock Mountain, per class

Tip: The endgame. Come with a finished talent tree and a build that already won Blackrock Mountain.

Stuck on a zone? Earning talents is usually the fix, not a new build. Replay the previous zone a few times, then check the builds and tier list.
